A-2    Appendix A - Installing Quantrac 2005 on Networks with a Dedicated File Server
The standard instructions for installing and configuring Quantrac 2005 assume that it will be installed on a
“peer-to-peer” network1.  If you will be using Quantrac 2005 on a network with a dedicated file server
(e.g., Microsoft Windows NT Server or Novell NetWare)
2
, follow the installation instructions below.
1.
Create a directory on your file server “Data” that will be used to store the Quantrac 2005 databases.
This directory must have full read/write access for all users that will be accessing the system.
2.
Be sure that you have a connection (drive letter) available on each of the workstations on which you
are going to install Quantrac 2005.
3.
Use the Quantrac 2005 “Server” disk set to install Quantrac 2005 on one computer, per the instructions in
the “Installing and Starting Quantrac 2005” section in Part 1 of this User’s Guide.
4.
This installation will have copied the empty database files HVAC01.DAT, ATTACHMENTS.DAT, and
DIRECTMAIL.MDB to the directory “c:\quantum\data”.  Copy this file to the directory that you have
prepared in step 1 above.
5.
Start Quantrac 2005, and click “Setup|Options|Reattach Data” on the menu bar.  The system will display
a dialog box from which you need to select the drive and directory where HVAC01.DAT is located.  Click
on HVAC01.DAT, and then click the OK button.
6.
You should then see the system “Attaching Tables” and the system should start.
7.
Delete the file HVAC01.DAT from “c:\quantum\data” (on the Quantrac Server computer, so that the data
files only exist on your File Server.
8.
To install Quantrac 2005 on any remaining workstations, use the Quantrac 2005 CD ROM and refer to the
“Installing and Starting Quantrac 2005” section in Part 1 of this User’s Guide.
9.
At the end of each workstation installation, you will be prompted to “enter the location of HVAC01.DAT”.
The system will display a dialog box from which you need to select the drive and directory where
HVAC01.DAT is located.  Click on HVAC01.DAT, and then click the OK button.
NOTE:  The two Quantrac 2005 utilities, “Database Maintenance” and “Quantrac Backup”, will be
installed on the computer on which you installed the “Server” disks.  You will need to periodically run the
Database Maintenance Utility from this computer
3
.  (See Part 3 of this User’s Guide for step-by-step
instructions.)  While you can use the Quantrac Backup program to back up the database to floppy disks,
we strongly urge you to speak with your network administrator to ensure that the HVAC01.DAT file is
backed up at least once per day.

1
In a “peer-to-peer” network, the computer that stores the database is also used to the run the program.  Conversely, in a
dedicated file server environment, the database itself is stored on the file server and all client workstations connect to this
server.  Larger, higher performance networks will use a dedicated file server configuration.
2
Quantrac 2005 should work properly on other network operating systems; however, this has not been tested and we cannot
guarantee results.
3
You will need to change the command line for the Database Maintenance Utility to set the path to the database
file, as follows:
For Windows 95/98/NT4, 2000, XP, XP Pro, and Millennium, click your right mouse button on “Start”, click
“Explore”, double-click “Programs” in the right side of the window, double-click on Quantrac 2005, click your
right mouse button on “Database Maintenance”, click “Properties”, click the “Shortcut” tab, and edit “Target”,
changing “c:\quantum\data” to the network path to HVAC01.DAT.
