Maintaining your Disk Drive
In order to optimize the performance of your computer and minimize the possibility of disk failure, you should
periodically run disk maintenance utilities. SCANDISK and DEFRAG are two such programs that are included with
Windows 95.
Repairing disk errors with SCANDISK
SCANDISK will perform diagnostics on your hard disk and will repair several common problems that routinely occur.
We recommend that you run this utility at least once per month.
Windows 95/98
1.
Click the Start button.
2.
Click Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and click Scandisk.
3.
Follow the on-screen instructions to completion.
Windows 2000
1.
Double-click on My Computer icon on your desktop
2.
Right click on the appropriate disk drive icon
3.
Select Properties
4.
Click on the “Tools” tab
5.
Follow the instructions or on-line Windows help to check your disk .
Defragmenting the disk with DEFRAG
Over time, files on your hard disk tend to become broken up into small non-contiguous pieces. This will tend to
degrade system performance. The DEFRAG utility reorganizes your hard disk by reassembling these pieces. We
recommend that you run DEFRAG with the “Full Optimization” option at least once per month.
Windows 95/98
1.
Click the Start button.
2.
Click Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and click Disk Defragmenter.
3.
Follow the on-screen instructions to completion.
Windows 2000
6.
Double-click on My Computer icon on your desktop
7.
Right click on the appropriate disk drive icon
8.
Select Properties
9.
Click on the “Tools” tab
10.
Follow the instructions or on-line Windows help to check your disk .
Notes:
1.
Scandisk and Defrag are not Quantrac Corporation utility programs. They are Microsoft utility programs,
intended for use on any disk-based operating system.

3.
WindowsNT does not include these disk utility routines. You may purchase 3
rd
party software (i.e. Norton Disk
Doctor for NT) which includes these and other disk maintenance utility programs.
