Part 1 Getting Started

Configuring your Local Area Network
The following are for previous versions of the Windows operating systems
as
reference, only. For later versions of Windows, follow their User's
Guide.
Network Installation
A network is simply two or more computers that are connected to enable them to
share files and printers. One computer (the server) stores and shares the database, and the other computer(s)
(the workstation(s)) connect through the network to the server for database operations. Before installing
Quantrac, you will need to decide which computer will be the server and which computer(s) will be the
workstation(s). Quantrac can operate on either (1) a peer-to-peer network, in which the computer that
stores the database is also used to run the program; or (2) a network with a dedicated server.1 The instructions in
this section apply to a peer-to-peer installation only. (See Appendix
B for instructions on installing Quantrac
on a network with a dedicated file server.)
For most network installations, we recommend Microsoft Windows own LAN
software.
If you are installing on any
other type of network, see Appendix B.)
The following instructions assume that your networking hardware
and software have been properly installed and configured. If necessary, see your operating systems
manual for information.
