Writing Conventions
To help you locate and interpret information easily, this book uses consistent visual cues and a few
standard text formats.  They are explained below so you’ll recognize them as you work.
The Keyboard
The keys on your keyboard are referred to frequently in procedures, but occasionally the keys
may not be labeled exactly as they are in this book.  For example, the RETURN key on some
keyboards is the same as the ENTER key on others.  Generally, however, you should be able to
determine the proper key.
The names of keys on your keyboard are always shown in small capital letters.  For example, the
Control key is shown as CTRL, and the Escape key is shown as
ESC
.
Sometimes you will need to press keys in combinations and sequences.  A plus sign (+)
between key names means to press and hold down the first key while you press the second key.
For example, “press ALT
+ESC” means to press and hold down the ALT key and press the
ESC
key,
and then release both keys.  Further, a comma (,) between names means to press and release
the keys one after the other.  For example, “press ALT,F
” means to press and release the ALT key,
and then press and release the F key.
Arrow keys is the collective name for the up arrow, down arrow, left arrow, and right arrow keys.
A “|” between words means to click these menu items in sequence.  For example, “click
Setup|Company Data” means to click Setup from the menu bar, and then Company Data from
the drop-down menu.
